Keep the clip short
GIF stores every frame separately with no motion compression, so file size climbs quickly. A three second clip at 12 fps and 480 px wide is a good starting point. The frame count is capped at 240 to keep your browser responsive, and the frame rate is reduced automatically if a longer range would exceed that.
Settings that matter most
Width has the largest effect on file size, followed by frame rate, then duration. Dropping from 720 px to 480 px roughly halves the data. Twelve frames per second reads as smooth for most content; eight is enough for slow movement.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF so large?
GIF has no inter-frame compression, so every frame is stored almost in full. Reduce the width, lower the frame rate, or trim the clip shorter.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format cannot carry audio. Use the WEBM output if you need sound.
How long can the clip be?
The frame count is capped at 240. At 12 fps that is about 20 seconds; the frame rate is lowered automatically for longer ranges.
Why do the colours look flat?
GIF is limited to a 256-colour palette, so gradients and photographic footage show banding. That is a limitation of the format itself.
